Beta Kappa Psi: “A New Fraternity”

Beta Kappa Psi, Black & Latino Fraternity, Inc is celebrating its 17th year of existence, so it may seem odd to discuss this organization as a “new” fraternity. However, since its founding in 1992, Beta Kappa Psi has been an organization perpetually dedicated to the idea of constant service and improvement. We face the new millennium with a growing sense of optimism and a newfound awareness that “good” will not be good enough. We must strive to be an organization which not only challenges the traditional perception of fraternities, but also one which deals with the issues of culture and race in a completely new perspective.

“One culture, any race.” This phrase accurately describes Beta Kappa Psi’s philosophy of inclusion.  While we are proud to be a fraternity founded by eight African American men at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Beta Kappa Psi has always found itself in a position which appeals to people of many different races and backgrounds. The question that begs to be asked is “Why is this true?” The answer is simple enough in that our ideas are universal. While traditional organizations may focus on what they have been, Beta Kappa Psi remains focused on what it can and will become. Race is a limiting concept that forces people of a nationality and or color into preconceived roles and expectations.

Any man will tell you that people of the same nationality can be as different as night and day in their beliefs and ideals.  A culture, however, is defined by a set of shared ideas, traditions, and values. The men of Beta Kappa Psi share a common bond through their dedication to the concepts of scholarship, unity, honesty, integrity, and leadership.  Moreover, the brotherhood of Beta Kappa Psi thrives on the concept that in order to truly grow as an individual, one must experience views which can challenge preconceived perceptions to foster growth and enlightenment.

“One culture, any race.” This is a completely new way of looking at ourselves and the world we live in. “One culture, any race.”  This presents a challenge to the closed minded to look beyond what they believe to be true and realize the truth is largely dependent on one’s perspective. “One culture, any race.” This is a philosophy that suggests the coexistence of various races in order to attain a win-win situation if we are willing to learn from one another. “One culture, any race” – the motto for a new millennium, and a “new” fraternity.
